Tromsø is the best place to see the Northern Lights. You can learn more about why Tromsø is the best location to see the Aurora Borealis on our FAQ page. Check also our blog About the Northern- and Southern Lights.
There are many different ways to explore the wilderness. Regardless of what type of traveller you are or what your time frame is, there is a good chance to see the Northern Lights. As always, we’d suggest embracing the darkness, become night owls and plan evening activities.
I’m staying for a couple of days. What is the best option for me to explore the Lights?
Most travelers come to our northern paradise for just a couple of days, averaging 3 nights. If you are planning a weekender to the north, we always recommend making the most out of your time in the evenings. For weekenders, we suggest having your base in Tromsø city (on Tromsøya ;Tromsø island). All popular activities will depart from there. In order to have the most opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis, we recommend arriving during the day and join for a tour that evening.
We’d suggest booking three evenings chasing the Northern Lights on our Aurora Hunt activity. Alternatively, we can suggest booking two Aurora Hunts and one Star Walk on the Wild Side for those more adventurous. Note: the Star Walk on the Wild Side availability depends on the moon cycles. We need enough light to safely snowshoe at night.
We can recommend during the day to join for Winter Arctic Landscapes or another day time activity that will return you to Tromsø city well in advance for the night tour departure time.
